A LOVE THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO A LIFE / UN AMOR QUE NO PERTENECE A UNA VIDA
Some connections do not enter your life. They interrupt it.
You meet, and something becomes immediately familiar without ever having been routine. Conversation does not feel like discovery. It feels like resuming. There is recognition before there is knowledge. You understand each other faster than time should allow, and yet you never truly integrate into each other’s daily existence.
Then you separate.
Not dramatically. Not because of betrayal or conflict. You simply return to the rest of your lives, and the connection closes as if it were placed carefully on a shelf. Years pass. Entire phases of life unfold. Other relationships come and go. You change jobs, cities, priorities. Yet when you meet again, nothing important has aged.
It does not feel like memory.
It feels like continuation.
Most relationships are shaped by repetition. They deepen through ordinary exposure. Shared routines, minor disagreements, gradual adjustments. Over time, affection becomes familiarity, and familiarity becomes stability. This kind of connection never undergoes that process. It exists only in concentrated intervals.
Because of that, it never becomes ordinary.
You never learn how the other person reacts to daily irritation, fatigue, or boredom. You never test the relationship against responsibility. You never see what would happen if it had to survive logistics. Instead, you meet in a suspended space where time behaves differently. The intensity is preserved because it is never required to sustain itself continuously.
And yet it is not imaginary.
There is physical presence. Conversation, touch, laughter, silence that does not feel empty. You do not confess love because the words would almost be unnecessary. The understanding already exists, but it has no place to go. It cannot develop into partnership, and it does not dissolve into past.
So it remains.
It becomes a fixed point in your personal history. Not an alternative life, but a parallel one. A relationship that does not accompany you through your days but returns to you at intervals, unchanged. When it reappears, it does not feel like meeting a person again. It feels like stepping back into a version of yourself that still exists somewhere.
This is why it is difficult to categorize. It is not unfinished, because nothing was interrupted. It is not completed, because nothing was resolved. It occupies a space outside the usual timeline of relationships.
You do not plan a future together. You do not build a shared life. And yet the connection persists with a consistency that many structured relationships never achieve.
Perhaps some forms of love are not meant to organize a life.
They are meant to mark it.
They do not accompany you continuously. They appear periodically, remind you of a particular openness, and then disappear again, leaving the rest of your life intact but slightly altered.
The difficulty is not that it cannot become permanent. The difficulty is that its impermanence is part of what keeps it recognizable.
If it entered ordinary time, it might transform into something else. Closer, but also different. More stable, but less precise. The intervals protect it. Distance preserves it. Reality might dilute it.
So it lives in recurrence instead of duration.
You meet.
You recognize.
You separate.
And yet nothing essential feels lost.
Some bonds are not sustained by proximity.
They are sustained by return.
